Bruno Thost was born on 23 April 1936 in Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany. He was an actor and writer, known for The Three Musketeers (1993), The Tin Drum (1979) and Coup de Grâce (1976). He was married to Maren Cornehls. He died on 28 August 2019 in Vienna, Austria.- After graduating from high school in Breslau in 1920, he joined the German army. In 1923 Gehlen was promoted to lieutenant and in 1934 he was promoted to captain. In the meantime, Gehlen began studying at the War Academy in 1933, which he completed in 1935. Under the National Socialist government of Adolf Hitler he was appointed to the general staff in 1935/36. In 1939 Gehlen was promoted to major. He took part in the German attack on Poland that began in 1939 as first general staff officer of an infantry division. Gehlen also took part in the campaign against France and was appointed adjutant to Chief of General Staff Halder in October 1940. In April 1942, Gehlen was appointed head of the "Foreign Armies East" department in the General Staff of the German Army, where he was responsible for military reconnaissance in the East until 1945. In December 1942 Gehlen was promoted to colonel and towards the end of 1944 to major general.
From 1942 to 1945, Gehlen built up an extensive intelligence network in order to collect the necessary information, especially about the Red Army. However, in view of the German defeats in the Russian campaign, Gehlen's work increasingly lost credibility in Hitler's eyes, so he was replaced in April 1945 shortly before the German surrender. After the end of the war, Gehlen handed over his information network with extensive National Socialist intelligence material to the American occupying forces in 1945. Gehlen, who is said to have never been involved in politics during the Nazi regime in Germany despite his military career, was classified as not incriminated by the military tribunal in 1946. With the approval of the United States, the military expert was able to set up a foreign intelligence service in post-war Germany under the project name "Organization Gehlen", initially in Oberursel. In 1947 the organization moved to Pullach near Munich in order to be physically distant from the German seat of government. In 1955, the organization was officially handed over to the Federal Republic under the government of Konrad Adenauer.
On April 1, 1956, the Gehlen organization began its official work under the name "Federal Intelligence Service" (BND), which from then on was subordinate to the Federal Chancellery as an office. At the same time, the BND network in the GDR was dismantled towards the end of the 1950s. The infiltration of the BND by eastern agendas also cast a spectacular light on the organization and Gehlen. Domestic intelligence and his ideas about the meaning and function of the BND in the democratizing West German Republic also increasingly came under public criticism.
Nevertheless, Gehlen was able to continue to lead the successor organization BND as president beyond retirement age until May 1, 1968. In 1971 his book "The Service. Memories 1942-1971" was published.

When she couldn't qualify for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Apel decided to try biathlon. Apel's first races were in the European Cup, the second division to the World Cup. At her first World Championships in Ruhpolding in 1996, Apel won a gold medal with the relay team. She took part only in one other individual event - the sprint where was 31st. The next year in Brezno-Osrblie' World Championships in 1997, Apel won her second gold medal once again with the relay. She finished 42nd in the sprint and 25th in the pursuit. From the 2000 World Championships in Holmenkollen, she won two silver medals in the sprint and the relay. In the other events, Apel was 6th in the Individual, 4th in the pursuit and 5th in the mass start. These were and will remain her most successful World Championships. But in the other disciplines finished 31st in the Individual, 4th in the sprint, 8th in pursuit and 15th in the mass start. At the World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk that season didn't manage to win any medal. Her performance was 36th in the Individual, 18th in the sprint and 28th in the pursuit. In spite of such results, Apel finished 7th in the overall. The 2004-2005 season marks her victory in the sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk. Also the good World Championships in Oberhof in 2004, from which Apel won two medals - a silver in the mass start and a bronze in the relay. Something of the same kind happened during her last World Championships in 2005 in Hochfilzen. Apel won a silver medal with the relay. Placed 33rd in the Individual, 31st in the sprint, 7th in the pursuit and 16th in the mass start. She concluded the season once more in the Top 10, at 8th position in the overall. In 2005-2006 all the attention and preparation was for the Olympics in February in Turin. But that didn't prevent, the fantastic Katrin Apel to make three podiums in the World Cup tour. The first one was when she came 3rd in the sprint in Östersund, then another 3rd place in the pursuit in Pokljuka and again 3rd in the mass start in Oberhof. At the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Apel won a bronze medal in the relay alongside Martina Beck, Andrea Henkel and Kati Wilhelm. Apel participated in the sprint where finished 22nd and in the pursuit - 11th place. Katrin Apel's fabulous and so successful career ended in 2006-2007.
